Barran Liebman attorneys, staff, family and friends gathered on Saturday afternoon to volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank to repackage bulk food. Together, Team Barran Liebman helped repackage 6,750 pounds of macaroni, which will provide approximately 5,192 meals for Oregonians. With 1 in 14 Oregonians feeling hunger pains daily, and with 5 of those 14 being children, Barran Liebman was happy to help.
Nelson Atkin, a founding partner at Barran Liebman, suggested the firm help support the Oregon Food Bank when he heard of the great work being done by local volunteers. “Each person who lends a hand can help make a tremendous difference,” noted Nelson. “I knew our firm would rally around this cause, and I am so proud over 20 of us were able to participate.”
Currently, 260,000 Oregonians rely on meals from emergency food boxes each month. That compares to 200,000 in 2007-08. Volunteers from Barran Liebman put together thousands of two-pound bags of macaroni for food boxes, which provide a three- to five-day supply of groceries.
“It’s very hard hearing the numbers,” said Heidi King, a paralegal at Barran Liebman, who brought two of her children to volunteer. “Knowing that 85,800 children need emergency food each month really makes you stop and think. Then, the next step is to act. At Barran Liebman our slogan is ‘Committed to Our Community’ – and I’m proud that our slogan is more than just words – it’s a call to action.”
